Different Strokes from Different Folks Challenge

This is a painting I painted for the Different Strokes from Different Folks challenge. I thought I would pass when I first saw the photo that Karin Jurick posted. It was a boring image of a figure. I just didn't find it interesting at all. Then I realized that that made it even more of a challenge and an exercise that I should make myself do. I'm glad I did it. Finding the recipe for the black flesh was an exercise of its own. I think I did a pretty good job. I've included a copy of the photo.

  1. Keep going, girl! You just keep getting better and better! You turned "boring" into "beautiful". I just love your use of that Prussion Blue, very calming and peaceful, yet bold and inviting. Makes me want to go right into the painting and sit down with this fellow.

  4. Very successful use of the dark blue background with his blue clothing - it gives it a wonderful, dream-like quality. Lovely!

  5. Hey Karen, Wasn't this a fun one to do once you got into it? I wasn't inspired to try it either but it just got me out of a 6 week slump and I did also enjoy experimenting with those black skin tones. Yours are warmer than mine, I think I'll try that next time around because I like the effect!

  6. Camille, yes, once I got into it, it was fun. In fact, it is one of my favorite pieces. I too was in a terrible slump. I got out of it in June when I attempted the Virtual Paintout. Evidently, these assignments are good for that.

I loved you interpretation of the man on the metal chair.
